Technical Workshop on SQI-OAI

When: March 10-11, 2009
Where: Leuven

Background

The goal of this 2-day workshop is to provide developers of learning content, tools and repositories with technical expertise necessary to connect to the Learning Resource Exchange, which is a European eLearning digital repositories federation, using best practice, state of art standards as recommended in ASPECT project. We will start by introducing both OAI-PMH and SQI to delegates as enabling standards in this field. Next, we will assist participants in implementing these standards on top of their existing repository or learning platform.

The Simple Query Interface (SQI) is an API for querying. Repositories and platforms that implement an SQI interface enable federated search engines to dynamically query their content.

The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides a framework for harvesting metadata. Using this framework, metadata can be extracted from repositories and copied to the ASPECT federation.

As the scope up of this workshop is primarily technical, we strongly recommend that participants bring their development environment with them together with the sources of the application or repository they wish to provide access to in ASPECT. Participants in this workshop should have basic programming skills and a working knowledge of XML and JAVA as most of the samples will be based on java programming. Other languages like PHP and .Net could of course also be used.

We recommend reading the following materials prior to the workshop:

Attendance at the workshop is free of charge but delegates must pay their own travel and subsistence. A nominal fee of 40 Euros (20 Euros per day) also needs to be paid (cash) on site to cover coffee, water, orange juice and lunch.
